Bespoke insoles for common injuries

For many, sports are an important part of everyday life. From professional participators to ‘weekend’ athletes, exercise can be a great way to keep fit, de-stress and socialise. However, over time musculoskeletal trauma to the joints, bones, tendons, ligaments and nerves can occur.  This may be a result of a training load injury, or there may be an underlying biomechanical dysfunction.  Whatever the cause, these sporting injuries, although common, can be quite painful, and hinder performance.

Bespoke insoles can be used to help aid recovery, through improving the function of the injured or vulnerable tissues and in assist in the reduction of tissue strain.

The most common sports injuries where bespoke insoles can help are:

Achilles Tendonitis

What it is: When the Achilles tendon – the band of tissue that connects your heel bone to your calf muscles – undergoes intensive or repetitive strain.

How it is caused: There are many causes of Achilles Tendonitis, however the most common are a sudden increase in training and exercising intensely with very few or no rest periods. Like any tendon, the Achilles weakens over time. Therefore, it is important to moderate exercise to reduce the excessive strain that can quicken the aging process.

How bespoke insoles can help: Wearing a bespoke insole can help reduce the shock impact of the heel, protecting the Achilles tendon.

Patello Femoral Pain Syndrome

What it is: Common in runners, Patello Femoral Pain Syndrome, known more widely as ‘runner’s knee’ is a pain caused by irritation around the patella (knee cap).

How it is caused: Patello Femoral Pain Syndrome is prevalent in runners with gait abnormalities such as excessive pronation or a biomechanical abnormality such as a weakness of the hamstring/hip. Runner’s knee is most commonly caused by the runner falling out of their zone of optimum stress. However, neglecting strength training in the quadriceps and tight hamstrings can also be causes, as both can place unnecessary pressure on the knee.

How bespoke insoles can help: A bespoke insole can place the runner in their optimum running gait, allowing them to work within their zone of optimum stress, reducing the risk of injury.

Iliotibial Band Syndrome

What it is: Iliotibial Band Syndrome is a common overuse injury. The iliotibial band is a ligament that helps to stabilise the knee, running from the hip to the shin, down the outside of the thigh. When excessive strain is applied the ligament becomes tight and inflamed, causing pain and discomfort.

How it is caused:  Most common in sportswomen because of their natural hip alignment, and those who overpronate, Iliotibial Band Syndrome occurs when the iliotibial band rubs against the knee bone, causing inflammation.

How bespoke insoles can help: A bespoke insole can reduce the amount of excessive pronation that occurs during exercise, as well as improving the ground reaction forces working through the hip and knee, thereby reducing stress on the iliotibial band.

Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome

What it is:  Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome is pain or tenderness felt along the outer or inner tibia (shin).  If left untreated the weakening of the tibia could lead to more serious injuries, such as a stress fracture.

How it is caused: Like Achilles Tendonitis, Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome can be caused by increasing exercise intensity suddenly or through an increased training load.  Biomechanical dysfunction can also be at fault, with excessive pronation and foot alignment causing tightness in the calf muscle which can affect the shock-absorbing capabilities of the foot and ankle during running.

How bespoke insoles can help: A bespoke insole can reduce muscle strain caused by poor orthotics and help correct excessive foot pronation in exercise.

Plantar Fasciitis

What it is:  Plantar Fasciitis is a painful condition that effects the heel and its soft tissues. When placed under intense or repetitive stress the plantar fascia, a band of tissue running underneath the sole of the foot, thickens over time.

How it is caused: When a person increases the intensity of their exercise suddenly or exercises with very few rest periods. Those who excessively pronate are also prone to the injury.

How bespoke insoles can help: Once the podiatrist has settled the tissue down, a bespoke insole can reduce the amount of excessive pronation that occurs during exercise, as well as help cushion the heel and provide comfort.

Metatarsal Stress Fracture

What it is:  A metatarsal fracture, very common in footballers, occurs when one of the long bones of the midfoot is cracked or broken. This may be due to sudden injury such as an acute fracture, or due to repeated stress like a stress fracture.

How it is caused:  Sudden injury or an increased training load are two of the main causes of metatarsal stress fracture. Sometimes biomechanical dysfunction such as a tendency to raise the heel early so that the forefoot is loaded for too long on the ground, can also be factors.

How bespoke insoles can help: Once the podiatrist has settled the tissue down, a bespoke insole can reduce the amount of excessive pronation that occurs during exercise, correcting the biomechanical issue, whilst providing comfort to the heel.

As many of the above ailments are caused by some form of biomechanical dysfunction, they can be treated and corrected with bespoke insoles. Podfo combines innovative technology and biomechanical expertise to produce high quality bespoke biometric insoles that are designed to meet individual needs.  Using specialist advanced technology, our bespoke insoles support your natural movement to help reduce the risk of pain and injury when exercising.
